If you’re looking for a playground that can keep kids entertained for hours, the Hyland Play Area in Bloomington absolutely lives up to the hype.
I’ve known of this park for years by its local nickname: the “Chutes and Ladders” playground, as this massive play area is one of the most popular destinations for kids in the Twin Cities. The bright colors, towering structures, and giant slides immediately reminded me of the classic board game, and it’s easy to see why it’s called this.

Located within Hyland Recreation Area near Hyland Lake, the playground is much more than your average neighborhood park. After parking, there’s a short walk up a small hill to reach the play area, but it’s an easy trek and well worth it once the playground comes into view.
The first thing that struck me was just how huge it is. The award-winning play structure features platforms, climbing areas, swings, and slides that stretch up to 50 feet long. Kids can climb, swing, hang, and explore from one end to the other, and there are enough features that even on a busy day it doesn’t feel overly crowded.
One thing I especially appreciated as a parent is that there is a separate section designed for younger children under five, as well as children with disabilities. It gives little ones a safer place to play while still feeling like they’re part of the action.

Parents will appreciate the amenities, too. There are several shaded picnic tables nearby, making it easy to take a snack break or enjoy lunch without sitting in the direct sun. The visitor center is another huge bonus, especially during longer visits.

Inside you’ll find clean restrooms, limited concessions, and a comfortable place to cool off or warm up depending on the season. During the winter months, the center also serves visitors enjoying Hyland’s cross-country ski trails.

What makes Hyland Play Area stand out is that it’s part of a larger recreation area. After the kids have climbed and slid to their hearts’ content, families can explore the surrounding park, enjoy views of nearby Hyland Lake, or simply relax and take in the scenery.
There’s even an outdoor gym near the play area which is a neat idea for free exercise!

Overall, I can see why Hyland Play Area is considered a Twin Cities favorite. Between the giant slides, colorful climbing structures, thoughtful design for younger children, and family-friendly amenities, it’s the kind of playground that turns a simple park visit into an adventure.
If your kids love climbing, sliding, and exploring, this is definitely one playground worth adding to your family’s must-visit list.
