FREE Family Events at the St. Paul Winter Carnival 2015

The 2015 Saint Paul Winter Carnival, known as “The “Coolest Celebration on Earth,” has begun!

Most events will take place in downtown Saint Paul, in and around Rice Park and Landmark Center, as well as at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

There are tons of events going on…MOST of which are FREE, making me give it a high-five for frugal family-friendliness!

There are too many events to share all in one post here, but I do want to highlight the free or low-cost kid-friendly activities going on that you won’t want to miss (especially as long as this winter stays as it has – not as brutal as last year!).

Urban Expedition 2015: Passport to Adventure at the St. Paul Landmark Center: FREE Events Jan 18 – Apr 19

Take your kids for an educational and fun trip around the world at the Landmark Center in St. Paul starting this Sunday, January 18th – for FREE!

Five Sundays of exploration await visitors to Landmark Center’s “Urban Expedition.” These free and family friendly events feature a different country each Sunday, and explore all aspects of its culture including music, dance, art, food, language and live animals. The 2015 Urban Expedition season begins Jan. 18 and closes April 19. Urban Expeditions are held on Sundays from 1-3 p.m.

Full Series Schedule:

Jan. 18 – Urban Expedition: Austria

Feb. 1 – Urban Expedition: Lebanon

Feb. 22 – Urban Expedition: Kenya

March 8 – Urban Expedition: Indonesia

April 19 – Urban Expedition: Peru

Upon arrival, guests can get their photo taken and placed in an Urban Expedition Passport. Once getting the passport stamped, families are invited to explore the different areas of the event. Each Urban Expedition presents live animals native to the featured country, crafts representative of the culture, traditional music or dance performances, and a language lesson. Samples of traditional foods are sold by a local restaurant or caterer specializing in the featured county’s cuisine. At the end of the season, guests with passport stamps from each Urban Expedition will be entered into a prize drawing.

Food Should Taste Good Snacks Review

I’m a health-food snacker. I love anything that tastes good and is healthful, too (especially now in the winter as it’s so tempting to hide under a blanket and snack when it’s some-crazy-number-below-zero-outside!).

This is why I was happy to try snacks sent to me by Food Should Taste Good to review with my family.

Food Should Taste Good graciously sent me several varieties of their tortilla chips: Multigrain, Blue Corn, Sweet Potato, and their limited edition Harvest Pumpkin.

When they arrived, I opened up the Sweet Potato chips to try. My kids noticed, tried some and before long, the whole bag was gone before I even had a chance to take a picture (so it’s actually an empty bag in this picture!). [Read more…]

Ice Castles in Eden Prairie’s Miller Park

The Ice Castles are here! In Eden Prairie, that is. For the second time in Minnesota, Brent Christensen & his crew built an ice castle made of thousands of icicles created by hand.

In 2013, after spending several years building ice castles around the country, California native Brent built one of his creations at the Mall of America. This year he did the same thing at Eden Prairie’s Miller Park, and it’s one of only four in the country (other Ice Castles are located in Utah, Vermont & New Hampshire).
