We all know that there is more than one way to save money. From meal planning and couponing to going DIY or getting thrifty, we can save money in so many different ways. One way that can save you a lot of money that often goes overlooked is getting your home and garage organized. A disorganized home or garage can be like losing change from a hole in your pocket. Here are 10 ways being organized can save you money.
1. Better for your car.
Our vehicles endure a lot of wear and tear, especially during the winter months here in the Twin Cities. Between the snow, the ice and the salt your car doesn’t need the added stress of sitting out in the elements 24/7. When your garage is organized you can park your car there, cutting down on that wear and tear and extending the life of your car.
2. Less clutter = less pests.
Having stacks of card board boxes just sitting on your garage floor is just begging for some little critter to make your home their home too. Investing in garage shelves will get your boxes up off the floor and can save you the stress and the money of getting rid of any pests.
3. Accurate inventory.
Having a disorganized home can lead to buying more of things you already have but didn’t know you had. A stapler can easily go MIA in a disorganized office or junk drawer. Leading you to believe it’s lost for good when you could end up owning 4 staplers and not even know it. That’s just one example, the same thing can happen with Christmas lights and sleds or school and craft supplies, the list goes on.
4. Belongings last longer.
If you don’t have a good system of organization for your belongings, no matter what part of your home it is, things can get damaged. Think of your kitchen appliances or pots and pans. If you just toss them all in the same cabinet without any rhyme or reason pots and pans can get dinged or dented and appliances can run the risk of plastic parts cracking.
5. Less clutter, better health.
Again, an organized garage can save you so much money. How many times have you tripped over boxes or bikes trying to navigate your garage? What if hubby throws out his back as he struggles to get the lawn mower out of the garage? Having an organized home can create a safer healthier environment and that will save you money for sure.
6. Better organized = more space to store stuff = no need for a storage unit.
Storage units are costly and you don’t get to enjoy the belongings you have stored there. When your home is organized and there is a place for everything, then you reduce (hopefully eliminate) the need to store your things in a big storage unit. That right there is a huge money saver.
7. Less waste.
This applies especially to your kitchen. If you have a well-organized pantry then you will know what you have and use it instead of buying more. You will be able to rotate items in and out easily without letting items go to waste by allowing them to pass their expiration date. Obviously this also applies to the fridge. Food waste means wasted money and organization can prevent that.
8. A cleaner home.
If you have an organized garage or mudroom, then you and your kids have a place to easily take off your shoes. During the summer mud and dirt won’t get tracked in and during the winter salt and grime will stay in check. Getting your carpets cleaned isn’t cheap, but cutting down on the mess that gets ground into your carpet, allows you to cut down on how often you need to get them cleaned.
9. Tax write-off.
Go through your belongings twice a year to sift through the things that you no longer need. Old toys, old clothes, old furniture, old dishes/pots/pans, old knick knacks or décor items can all be donated. Goodwill even gives you directions on how to get your donation written off on your taxes. Of course you could also do a garage sale to make some money back directly. Either way a bi-yearly clean out will save (or make) you money.
10. You won’t buy more of what you already have.
Did I mention this one already? Ok yes, but really it’s important. Buying more of what you already have is a huge waste of money. It is one thing to have genuinely lost something and need to replace it, but it is another thing entirely to have lost something in the mess or clutter of your own home. Get organized today and sell those 3 extra staplers at your garage sale come this spring.
