UPDATE: The Caveman is no longer there – it was removed by the artist who created it.
If you live in the Twin Cities and you haven’t heard on the news already, there’s a frozen caveman in Minneapolis!
Well, not a real one, of course – but a piece of art originally created by Leonic Art Collective as a prop for an awards ceremony.
His name is “Zug Zug,” and he’s been getting a lot of press lately by both the media and locals, who share their selfies with the caveman on social media.
However, one of the fun things about this “find” in Minneapolis is the mystery – where is he? How do people find him?
If you want to keep the mystery for yourself – STOP HERE! Otherwise…
Want to know exactly where Zug Zug is?
Despite the “fun” of looking for him, Zug Zug has gotten so much attention that people are now asking those who have found it for information. I was one of those people looking for details so I could take my kids and see it for ourselves.
And with the cold here in Minnesota, I didn’t want to be freezing my kids (or myself) outside hunting a long time for him.
So after seeing some discussion about where it’s located, I took my kids and tracked him down!
I had heard in several online groups that the frozen caveman was in Theodore Wirth Park, and you should park near the Chalet or Golf Course and walk north on the trail to find him.
We parked near the chalet (the lot was super busy), and I asked someone there where it was (there were a few different trails). The helpful attendant showed me this map and explained that if we don’t want to lose our parking spot, we could walk up the walkway (along Theodore Wirth Parkway) about 10-15 minutes to find the caveman. He was up just past a bridge that went over the road, and on the left we’d see a marker that said 45 North Trail.
Here the arrow shows where he is.
We walked up the walkway, which was icy and slippery in spots, past a parking lot. Then there was another parking lot on our right – an overflow parking lot. This is exactly across where the 45 North Trail marker was. In fact, we could see the caveman from the walkway here.
The 45 North Trail is kind of two parallel paths. We took the main one which went up a little, and there he was on the left! Right by Bassett Creek.
He was definitely getting some attention from visitors.
I took a couple’s picture, then they took pictures of me and my kiddos. (Yes, it was cold!)
When you get close to Zug Zug, you can see it’s not solid ice, but a plastic shell of sorts. It definitely looks like ice though, and Zug Zug does look real!
You can see here how icy the ground is. It was a colder day when we went, so the ground was even thicker with ice. People said that they knew people were falling down – and I saw a few trying to keep our balance (including ourselves).
Otherwise, there were a lot of people out and about despite the cold – in the park, people were snowshoeing, mountain biking, skiing, and sledding. It is a beautiful park with a lot to see and do.
How long will he be there?
One report says he’ll be there until the snow melts.
Plus, there supposedly is another caveman in a Minnesota park – but I haven’t heard details about that one. Have you?
Quick Instructions for Finding the Frozen Caveman
- Drive into Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.
- Drive past the chalet, and look for the OVERFLOW parking lot on your right. Park there.
- Cross the street and take the 45 North Trail, which follows the creek. Zug Zug will be on your left. You should be able to already see him when you enter the trail.

Here’s the park Zug Zug is in – his location is just north of the chalet, right by where Theodore Wirth Parkway crosses the river (Bassett Creek).

Thank you! I specifically didn’t go looking because I needed to know exactly where with three little kids!
