In Barnes & Noble, I’m already like a kid in a candy store. So you can guess how amazing it was to be among the first to tour a newly designed Barnes & Noble!
My kids and I previewed the new Barnes & Noble at City Place Shopping Center in Woodbury, which opens Wednesday, July 24th!
The purpose of this prototype store is to offer a new experience for shoppers and is part of their ongoing testing of new stores across the country.
The layout features a modern design throughout including oak bookshelves and a mix of wood-grain tile and carpet. And there are of course comfy tables and chairs so you can sit and browse through books, like these by the value book section.
And we found that the kids section was big and spacious. Everything was organized and designed so you could find everything quickly.
It has a LEGO® activity table and dedicated Storytime space.
My kids easily found plenty of books they wanted!
The cafe served Starbucks coffee and many food items including sandwiches, quiches, and baked goods. I enjoyed a Nitro Brew coffee which was super delicious – I just wish I had gotten a larger size.
There are many other features that will make this store a new experience for shoppers. For example, booksellers will have tablets with them so they can help customers wherever they are in the store.
There are also many tables where customers can sit near the cafe with charging docks and stations.
My kids and I loved the open feel. And it has the same amount of inventory as other layouts but with a more spacious feel.
The only thing that this store didn’t have that other locations have is a music section, but I didn’t really notice as there was so much else. The reason for this is that movies and music sales are down (since so much is going digital), but there is growth in other areas like kids and young adult books, so Barnes & Noble is focusing on serving those needs better.
Barnes & Noble Woodbury opens on July 24th, 2019, and is located at 375 Radio Drive, Woodbury, Minnesota. The previous Barnes & Noble location serving the Woodbury community at 7020 Valley Creek Plaza closed on July 23rd.
Plus, there are special GRAND OPENING WEEKEND EVENTS:
- Storytime and Activities Featuring “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates”
- Back to School Educator Appreciation Shopping Weekend
- Baby & Me Storytime Featuring Busy Bee: Happy Llama
Plus, there are book clubs and special events all year long so be sure to follow them for updates!

The open-feel was probably was my biggest selling point.. It does depress me that there isn’t a music section, because music is my life, since I’m a singer.. I’m unsure if this particular Barnes & Noble would be for me..
