Our family just celebrated our kids’ first week of school with the ultimate stay-cation – at the Water Park of America!
As you may know, I’m a huge fan of stay-cations. They’re much more budget-friendly, and give you an opportunity to “discover” your own city in a new way. And they can be just as fun as traveling to another destination, especially if you stay in a local hotel or resort, because there’s the thrill of checking in, discovering your hotel room and amenities, eating out (unless you bring your own food), not having to cook or clean, mingling with tourists, and exploring attractions in the area.
We’ve now discovered that a GREAT place to enjoy your own family’s stay-cation is the Water Park of America, which is connected to the Radisson Hotel Bloomington and is about a half mile from the Mall of America.
Though summer vacation may be over, it’s always summer and 85 degrees at the Water Park of America’s 70,000 square feet of pools, hot tubs, and water slides (including the tallest water slide in Minnesota!).
Our Room
We checked in Friday afternoon for a 1-night stay in a Deluxe King suite with bunk beds.
The bunk beds were a HUGE hit with the kids. They especially loved the curtain so they could make it a hideout.
The amenities in the room included a microwave, refrigerator (I brought milk and cereal for breakfast), coffee maker and a large flat-screen TV (which was popular with the kids, since we don’t have cable at home).
We also had an AWESOME view from our balcony overlooking the Water Park.
Here’s a quick video with the view from our balcony:
TO THE WATERPARK!
For dinner we headed to the Water Park where there’s a Dairy Queen Grill & Chill restaurant. I went healthful and had a tasty salad with grilled chicken. The kids had kids meals which came with free ice cream – yum! (I may have helped them eat their ice cream…)
Then we got in our swimsuits for some water fun!!! It wasn’t very busy, as things get less crowded at this time of year, so it’s a great time to visit. We did everything from the lazy river (my personal favorite) to the Fort Snelling play structure. There’s also a surf simulator called the FlowRider, a Wave Pool (the kids loved floating in a tube here), and of course, water slides!
What we all liked best about the water park was how WARM the water was. We’ve been to other water parks that give us the chills after a short time (I get cold easily). But this one was wonderful – it was steamy warm, which we could feel from our balcony and when we first walked in, ready for water park fun.
AND – one of the best perks of staying in the Radisson Bloomington Hotel here is EARLY ACCESS TO THE WATER PARK! Normally it opens to the public at 11:00am, but hotel guests can get in at 9:00am!
The hotel also includes a huge arcade and really nice fitness center, which overlooks the water park.
For dining, there’s a restaurant called Split Rock Grille & Bar with casual all-day dining. There’s also a cafe called Sleepy Eye Cafe where you can get really good coffee and cappuccino (I had one with hazelnut…mmm), doughnuts, fruit, breakfast sandwiches and other snacks. (Notice the Minnesota theme throughout the hotel and water park?)
Overall we had the BEST time. Whether you stay in the Radisson Hotel adjoining the Water Park, or just visit the water park, you’ll have a lot of fun with your family.

This sounds wonderful! I’ve always wondered whether a hotel stay in the Cities could be worth it from us (from Rochester, so not that long of a drive…) but this sounds like it might be.
