Did you know you can explore a cave that’s 200 feet underground right here in Minnesota? Even better—it’s only about 2.5 hours from the Twin Cities!
If you’re looking for a unique family adventure, Niagara Cave in Harmony, Minnesota deserves a spot on your Minnesota bucket list. We visited recently, and it was one of the most memorable stops on our road trip to Iowa.

What You’ll See Inside Niagara Cave
The guided tour lasts about one hour and takes you deep underground through a fascinating world of natural beauty and history. Along the way, you’ll see:
A breathtaking 60-foot underground waterfall and flowing underground river.

Ancient fossils embedded in the cave walls

Incredible geological formations created over millions of years

An underground chapel that’s actually used for weddings!

Some rocks in the cave glow blue thanks to a natural reaction known as fluorescence!

Our guide shared so many interesting facts about how the cave was formed and the unique features that make it one of Minnesota’s hidden gems.
You can even pan for gems outside!

Be Ready for the Stairs!
One thing to know before you go: there are 550 stairs total—275 on the way down and 275 back up. It’s definitely a workout!

Though the stairs sound daunting, they mostly don’t happen all at once. There’s a few stairs down, then a stop, then more stairs, then another stop. But going back up at the end you do a lot of them at once.
We visited with our teenagers, and they had no problem with the climb. I was fine but the last few steps were definitely hard! We also saw several parents carrying younger children, which looked like quite the workout. If your little ones are comfortable with lots of stairs, the experience is absolutely worth it, but it’s something to keep in mind when planning your visit. You may be carrying more than yourself!
And it’s definitely not handicapped accessible. You have to be able to climb 275 steps down, and 275 steps up, and not hold up the group. If you walk with a cane or have asthma or have a heart condition, this is probably not a tour for you. You don’t want to have an incident down here and not be able to get out – there is no emergency room in the bottom of the cave, and no elevator out.
Hours and Admission Prices
Niagara Cave is open seasonally – in 2026 they are open 7 days a week from May 1st to November 1st.
Admission prices (including taxes and fees) at the time of our visit were:
- General Admission: $24.39
- Child Admission: $15.07
We thought this was pretty reasonable. There’s a gift shop and restrooms. You can also pan for gems outside and there’s mini golf too.
Tips for Visiting Niagara Cave in Minnesota
- Wear layers! Dress for 48 degrees. It will be chilly in there. We just wore a sweatshirt or light jacket over our clothes.
- Prepare to get dripped on! There are wet areas of the cave and water dripped on us a few times. I joked that we should have brought our umbrellas while in there – you probably can’t bring an umbrella (it would damage the cave!) but maybe wear a poncho if you don’t want to get wet.
- Okay so there are some areas where you look down at a big waterfall or river…hold on to your kids! And your phone! My kids are teens so they were fine, but I was holding onto my phone for dear life as I took photos and videos while literally holding my phone above a 60-foot drop. I recommend using a phone lanyard so you don’t drop your phone while using it!
A Great Stop on a Midwest Road Trip
We visited Niagara Cave on our way to Iowa, where we were headed to New Day Dairy GuestBarn in Clarksville, Iowa, and Lost Island Theme Park and Lost Island Waterpark in Waterloo, Iowa. It made the perfect break in the drive and added an unforgettable adventure to our trip. It was on my bucket list for a long time and I’m glad we finally went.

If you’re planning a weekend getaway or a family road trip, I’d definitely recommend adding Niagara Cave to your itinerary.
