We saw an early screening of “Forgotten Island” this week! Wow it was a lot of action, music, and excitement – best for teen and young adult girls, in my opinion, as it was about two girls who are best friends. But it had a touching theme about friendship and how important friendship is even when life takes you in different directions.

It takes place in the Phillipines in the 1990s. Two best friends go through a portal to the island of Nakali where everything is bizarre and magical. They make unique friends like a half dog, half boy, a merman, a man child (literally- you have to see it), plus many others and they must battle Manang the Manananggal who is looking to retrieve her stolen wings.
I was reminded of other movies – there were some “wait, what?” reminders of “Frozen,” plus the evil character reminded me of Te Kā, the lava demon in Moana. Not sure if the subtle references were intentional or not – as this wasn’t a Disney movie. I realize the characters were from Philippine folklore which was cool. The music was great- because it took place largely in the 1990s there are great hits like “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The original music is very 80s inspired and catchy.
It’s not an ideal movie for little kids in my opinion as there are some more mature references and language like “b*nghole.” Plus some intense, scary scenes – the Manang character is creepy and turns her head around and twitches like many horror movie characters do for example. It’s rated PG and definitely more for older kids, tweens and adults.
My teen daughter loved it. I enjoyed 90s references and music. It was a fast-paced, entertaining movie with heartfelt scenes and messages about friendship. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
It’s in theatres September 25th!
