Looking for a unique summer evening activity in the Twin Cities? We visited the brand-new Wanderlight Trail: A Twilight Lantern Spectacular at the Minnesota Zoo, and it was a really fun way to spend an evening.
The Wanderlight Trail runs from June 3rd through August 2nd. It literally transforms the Minnesota Zoo into a glowing nighttime experience filled with larger-than-life illuminated animals, interactive displays, music, and colorful landscapes inspired by habitats from around the world.

As you walk the quarter-mile trail, you’ll travel through glowing oceans, deserts, jungles, prairies, and more. The lantern displays are impressive, with many of the animals moving and lighting up in creative ways. There are also plenty of photo opportunities throughout the experience, plus interactive elements that kids especially seemed to enjoy.
Our Experience
We went shortly before dark and stayed for over an hour exploring everything. The whole place was divided into different sections that feature underwater life, jungles, and native Minnesota animals. There was a lot more to see than we expected, and we found ourselves stopping often for photos and to watch the animated displays.
For example, there were parrots that moved…and if you said something into a microphone one of the parrots would repeat you!

One thing we noticed is that the lanterns become even more impressive after dark. If you’re deciding between an earlier or later time slot, I’d recommend going later if possible. However, the displays were still beautiful early in the evening if earlier works better for your kids or your schedule.
There’s music playing throughout the trail – some areas feel immersive like you’re in a dream.
Food and drinks are available along the trail, making it easy to grab a snack while you explore. There are also themed beverages and glow merchandise available for purchase if you want to fully embrace the experience.

Family Tips
If you’re planning to visit with kids, here are a few things to know:
✔️ Wear comfortable walking shoes. The trail is about a quarter mile long, but you’ll likely spend quite a bit of time stopping to look at displays.
✔️ Bring a stroller for younger children. Even though the trail isn’t long, little legs can get tired during an hour-long visit.
✔️ Wear bug spray. We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes during our visit, but it’s Minnesota summer and the entire event is outdoors.
✔️ Nothing is scary. It’s very family-friendly!
✔️ Plan for at least an hour. We were there longer than expected because there were so many displays to enjoy and photograph.

Is Wanderlight Trail Worth It?
For us, absolutely.
The combination of illuminated animals, music, interactive displays, and nighttime atmosphere made it feel like a unique experience rather than just a walk-through exhibit. It really feels magical!

Whether you’re looking for a family outing, date night, or something different to do this summer, Wanderlight Trail is worth adding to your list.
