Spoiler-Free Review: The Sheep Detectives
We had the chance to catch an early screening of The Sheep Detectives this weekend, and I went in expecting one thing… and got something completely different (in the best way).
My teens and I truly enjoyed it, and I definitely recommend it!

Here’s the synopsis:
In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.
My Review
Based on the previews, I thought this would be more of a silly, slapstick comedy about sheep getting into trouble. And while there are definitely fun and lighthearted moments, the film is so much more than that. It’s actually a clever and surprisingly heartfelt mystery.
It made me think of the game Clue – a classic “whodunit” where you’re trying to piece together what happened. It takes place in a small, fictional English town called Denbrook. George Hardy, a shepherd, cares for his sheep and even reads murder mysteries to them. When the shepherd is murdered, there are multiple suspects, and the story unfolds as the mystery is investigated. The twist? The sheep themselves step in to help solve the case.
There’s a silly police officer, an innkeeper, a butcher, a daughter…and a few other characters…it’s fun to look for clues and try to guess during the movie.
What really stood out to me is the emotional depth. This wasn’t just about solving a mystery — it was about death, loss, connection, and understanding. The shepherd wasn’t just a character; he was someone who loved and cared for his flock, and the sheep have to grapple with that loss. The film also touches on themes like exclusion and belonging.
Parent note: It’s worth noting for families: there are a few heavier moments. It’s more serious in parts than you might expect. There’s at least one darker scene that could be a bit scary for very young kids, and a couple of tearjerker moments. But overall, it’s still a family-friendly film.
In the end, this is a great multi-generational movie — one that both kids and adults can enjoy together, with enough humor, heart, and mystery to keep everyone engaged.
If you’re looking for something a little different to see as a family, this is a great pick — especially for a Mother’s Day weekend outing!
My verdict: Definitely worth seeing.
