I just saw the new Star Wars movie: “The Mandelorian and Grogu” and I highly recommend it for families who love Star Wars!
Here’s my spoiler-free review.
The Mandalorian series aired on Disney Plus from 2019 to 2023. In Star Wars time, the events take place 5 years after the events in “The Return of the Jedi” movie. This movie continues the story where it left off.
Here’s the synopsis:
The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu. Directed by Jon Favreau, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” also stars Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White and is produced by Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce, with music composed by Ludwig Göransson.
What makes “The Mandalorian and Grogu” especially enjoyable is that it captures the same sense of adventure and heart that made the original series so popular. Even without major twists or shocking reveals, the story stays engaging because it focuses so strongly on the relationship between Din Djarin (the Mandalorian) and Grogu. Their connection has clearly evolved from protector-and-child into a true partnership. They anticipate each other’s actions, work together instinctively, and bring both humor and warmth to the film.
What’s interesting is that many critics seem divided on the movie. Some reviews argue that it doesn’t significantly expand the larger Star Wars mythology or deepen the franchise’s political storylines. But audiences, especially families and longtime fans of the series, seem to be responding very differently.
Personally, I don’t agree with the idea that the film lacks depth. Not every Star Wars story needs galaxy-changing revelations to matter. This movie deepens the emotional side of the franchise by showing how trust, loyalty, and found family continue to shape these characters. The bond between Din Djarin and Grogu feels more natural and meaningful than ever, and that emotional connection is really what drives the story.
And heads up for anyone bringing kids: there are some very cute characters in this one besides Grogu – not as corny as Jar Jar Binks was, in my opinion, but definitely likable and entertaining. Kids will love it!
Overall, for families, the movie strikes a nice balance between action, humor, and heart. It feels adventurous without becoming overly dark, and longtime Star Wars fans will enjoy spending more time in this era of the galaxy while newer viewers can still follow the story easily.
Note: The movie is rated PG-13 and is probably not ideal for little kids due to violence. But older kids will enjoy Grogu and the adventure.
