If you’re looking for something different to do this winter in the Twin Cities, consider Vatican Unveiled at the Mall of America! We checked it out and it was definitely a memorable experience.

This exhibit is in town January 10th through February 1st, and it’s here as part of the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. If you’re interested in history or the Catholic Church, this is a rare opportunity to see artifacts you normally wouldn’t find anywhere near Minnesota.
This 19,000-square-foot exhibit has more than 300 items from popes, saints, and others. Some
of the items include a document with the second oldest papal signature outside of the Vatican, and a Swiss
Guard uniform from the time of Pius X so rare that the Swiss Guard asked to borrow it for their own exhibit!
My husband and I went together and spent over an hour walking through the exhibit. There is a lot to see and read—much more than I expected. The displays are very detailed, so it’s best enjoyed at a slower pace if you like really digging into historical context.

Is Vatican Unveiled Kid-Friendly?
This is where I want to be honest, especially for fellow parents. While there were kids there, this exhibit is definitely geared more toward adults. I chatted with one child who mentioned that there is a lot of reading, which pretty much sums it up. Younger kids may lose interest quickly unless they’re especially into history or museums.
That said, admission is free for kids age 5 and under, which helps if you have little ones tagging along while older kids or adults explore.

Highlights of the Exhibit
One of the most fascinating parts was seeing the artifacts—including items directly connected to popes and the Vatican. Yes, that includes a vial containing a pope’s blood, which is pretty wild to see in person. The exhibit really emphasizes the historical significance of the Catholic Church and its global impact.

Photo Opp with the “Pope!”
At the end you can even take a selfie with the “pope.”

My Honest Opinion
From a frugal mom perspective, this is probably best as a special outing rather than a casual family activity—especially if you’re bringing kids who won’t enjoy reading exhibits. But for adults, couples, or older teens who love history, it’s a meaningful and educational experience that feels very different from the usual Mall of America attractions.
If you’re already at MOA or looking for an indoor winter activity that’s a little out of the ordinary, Vatican Unveiled is worth considering.
Have you been—or are you planning to go? I’d love to hear what you thought!
