Why This Event Works for a Frugal Family
One of the reasons I keep sharing Hudson Hot Air Affair is because it’s very doable on a budget:
- Many activities are free or low-cost
- You can attend for a short window (great for little kids)
- It’s an easy day trip from the Twin Cities—no hotel needed
- You’re not locked into one expensive ticket or schedule
It’s presented by WESTconsin Credit Union and supported by local sponsors and volunteers, which helps keep costs reasonable for families.
Back at EP Rock (Finally)
After a year away, the event returns to EP Rock School, which means less confusion and a setup that locals know well. Many balloon pilots are returning too, so if weather cooperates, you’ll likely see balloons being “walked” across the sky—a favorite moment for kids and adults.
What You’ll See During the Main Weekend
You don’t have to do everything to enjoy this event. Even a short visit can be worth it. Expect:
- Hot air balloon launches (weather dependent—always good to set expectations with kids)
- A marketplace and craft fair (easy browsing, no pressure to buy)
- Family-friendly winter activities
- Evening balloon glow events that are especially fun after dark
Bundle up, bring snacks if you want to save money, and plan around nap schedules—it’s very parent-friendly in that way.
Countdown Events (Many Are Free or Cheap)
Leading up to the festival, there are several countdown events around Hudson. These are great low-cost outings on their own:
- January 24: Breakfast Crafts for Kids at Dick’s Bar & Grill
- January 24: Croix by Candlelight at YMCA Camp St. Croix
- January 31: Countdown Event at Jerry’s County Market
- February 1: Hotdish Cooking Contest at the Hudson Area Senior Center
- February 4: HHAA Canvas Party Painting Class
You can pick and choose what fits your schedule and budget—no need to do it all.

The Bottom Line
The Hudson Hot Air Affair, happening February 6–8, 2026, is a solid option if you want a winter outing that doesn’t feel overpriced or overwhelming. Whether you pop over for an hour or make a day of it, it’s an easy win for families trying to stretch their winter fun budget.
