Synopsis:
Karate Kid: Legends unites the iconic martial arts masters of one of the most beloved film franchises of all time to tell a completely new story full of action and heart. When kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) relocates to New York City with his mother to attend a prestigious new school, he finds solace in a new friendship with a classmate and her father. But his newfound peace is short-lived after he attracts unwanted attention from a formidable local karate champion. Driven by a desire to defend himself, Li embarks on a journey to enter the ultimate karate competition. Guided by the wisdom of his kung fu teacher, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), and the legendary Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), Li merges their unique styles to prepare for an epic martial arts showdown.
The Karate Kid franchise has quite a long history:
The Original Trilogy (1984–1989)
-
The Karate Kid (1984) – Directed by John G. Avildsen, this film introduced Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), a teenager who moves to California and is bullied by karate students. He learns karate and life lessons from Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), an Okinawan handyman and martial arts master. The film was a massive success and became a cultural phenomenon.
-
The Karate Kid Part II (1986) – Daniel and Mr. Miyagi travel to Okinawa, where Miyagi confronts an old rival and Daniel faces new challenges in a foreign land.
-
The Karate Kid Part III (1989) – Daniel is manipulated into competing again in the All Valley Karate Tournament by a vengeful enemy, Terry Silver, an associate of previous villain John Kreese.
The Next Karate Kid (1994)
This spin-off features Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank), a troubled teenager trained by Mr. Miyagi. Though not as successful as the originals, it marked an attempt to continue the franchise with a new lead.
The Karate Kid (2010)
A reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Though titled The Karate Kid, it focuses on kung fu, not karate. Set in China, it tells a similar story of a bullied kid (Dre Parker) learning martial arts from a wise mentor (Mr. Han). It was a box office hit and introduced the story to a new generation.
Cobra Kai (2018–present)
A sequel series streaming on Netflix, Cobra Kai revisits Daniel LaRusso and his rival Johnny Lawrence decades later. It explores their adult lives, the reopening of the Cobra Kai dojo, and new generations of students. The series has been critically acclaimed for blending nostalgia with fresh storytelling.
