Our Stay at Elroy’s at Big Rock Creek: Space, Views & Family Fun
If you’re looking for a peaceful, nature-filled escape with plenty of room to relax and have fun — Big Rock Creek in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin should definitely be on your list. We spent one night at a house rental called Elroy’s, and honestly, we all wished we could’ve stayed longer!
Big Rock Creek in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin is just an hour from the Twin Cities — close enough for a quick trip, but far enough to feel like a true escape. It’s known for its annual holiday lights event called “Miracle at Big Rock.” But Big Rock Creek also offers a lot year-round, including a venue for events like weddings, plus a variety of accommodations, from camping and glamping to modern house rentals that are great for families or groups.
We went for the Polk County Discovery Hunt, which is happening right now! You can win a big prize just by getting outside and having fun. We spent a beautiful spring weekend exploring Polk County, and our stay at Big Rock Creek made the perfect home base for all of our adventures.
The House: Spacious, Comfortable & Family-Friendly
Elroy’s is a standalone house on the Big Rock Creek property, and it felt like a perfect blend of cozy and luxurious. It sleeps up to 9 people — we had 4 in our family, so we had tons of space. One of the best parts? Our kids had the entire lower level to themselves. It had a living area, TV, and their own bathroom, which gave everyone a little breathing room (always a win on family trips!). For sleeping, there was a bunk bed, which they used, plus two single beds.
My husband and I had the upstairs bedroom, which came with a spacious bathroom of our own — a nice little touch that made it feel more like a retreat than just a rental. There was also a washer and dryer in the house, which we didn’t need for our short stay but would be so handy for longer trips.
The main living room had a big screen TV and board games, perfect for relaxing in the evening. The kitchen was a full kitchen, stocked with dishes and cookware, so if you want to cook during your stay, you’re all set. We used it to make a tasty breakfast of pancakes, eggs and fruit before heading out for adventure.
And the views from the house – including the kitchen window – are calming and peaceful.
The Outdoors: Room to Roam and Things to Do
Big Rock Creek sits on a huge piece of property (1000 acres!), and there’s no shortage of things to do outside. We rented a Polaris Ranger ATV to cruise around and explore — my husband and son especially loved this part.
My daughter’s favorite? The Scottish Highlander cows right next to our house. They were seriously adorable!
Our house rental included a lovely fire pit which we used at night.
And at night, the holiday lights lit up around the lake, which we could see from the house. Even though it was April, the lights made everything feel festive and magical. It was hands down my favorite part of the stay.
The lights were beautiful surrounding the lake! You can walk around the lake through the lights too.
These lights are part of their “Miracle at Big Rock” event each holiday seasons. But the keep them on year-round too!
We got this drone photo from above:
There’s also a grill, kids’ playground, sauna, and bikes available to use, so whether you’re into adventure or just relaxing, there’s something for everyone here.
The Big Rock Property
It was early in the season when we stayed, so some of the accommodations on the property weren’t being used and with the owners’ permission, I checked them out.
The Geodome is a must-see! It’s on its own lot around the lake, with views of nature, holiday lights and calm. It’s perfect for a romantic getaway. And you can win a night stay here if you participate in the Polk County Discovery Hunt!
