What’s a solar eclipse?
During a solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun’s rays and casting a shadow upon the Earth. The 2024 eclipse will be particularly noteworthy for its duration, with totality lasting up to four minutes and 28 seconds in some locations. This extended period of darkness will provide a unique chance to marvel at the intricate details of the Sun’s corona— the outer atmosphere that is typically obscured by its intense brightness.

- Timing is Everything: Check the schedule for when the eclipse will be visible in your area. You don’t want to miss out because you didn’t know when to look up! For example, in Minneapolis, the eclipse will last from 12:49pm to 3:14pm, and the moon will cover 3/4 of the sun.
- Stay Weather-Wise: Keep an eye on the weather forecast. Clear skies are ideal for viewing, so if it’s looking cloudy or rainy, you might need to have a backup plan or relocate to a clearer area.
- Bring Your Gear: Pack some supplies for your eclipse viewing party. Snacks, drinks, chairs, blankets—make yourself comfortable and settle in for the long haul.
- Snap Some Pics: If you’re into photography, this is your time to shine! Just make sure you’ve got the right equipment and know-how to capture those stunning eclipse moments safely.
- Check out Solar Eclipse Events in Your Area! In St. Paul, the Science Museum of Minnesota is offering solar eclipse glasses with admission on April 8th, and will offer special programming including presentations by NASA ambassadors, a special solar eclipse edition of the museum’s Stellar Tours exhibit and three different viewing terraces.
