Alice in Wonderland is a wacky, high-energy, fun show!
Watching this show is like being in a dream, but you don’t want to close your eyes and miss a moment of the vibrant colors, creative effects, whimsical sounds and energetic characters.
Alice in Wonderland features an incredibly talented cast of 20 actors who tell the story of Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole into the wacky world of Wonderland. The story is based on Lewis Carroll’s book, Alice in Wonderland, with some content from Through the Looking Glass.
Alice chases the rabbit into the audience, attends the craziest tea party, gets lost and surrounded by locked doors and arrows going every direction, meets a confusing caterpillar, and is helped (a little?) by a transient Cheshire Cat. She also encounters a careless Humpty Dumpty (he may swing above you if you’re in the front row), a fun pair named Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, a bold Duchess (she had a great voice) and an angry but insecure Queen of Hearts (who certainly liked to holler).
The story is ideal for ages 6 and up, though in many ways, it may be most enjoyed by adults who grew up with the story in many forms from Disney to TV movies, which are mentioned in the printed/digital program. It’s a bit bizarre and intense, and may be confusing to younger kids or those unfamiliar with the storyline.
It may be scary for younger kids, particularly with the brief appearance of the Jabberwocky, which is more of a suggestive character in how it was designed. Plus, there’s the queen who demands “Off with their head!” and an executioner who carries a big “ax.” But it’s the Children’s Theatre, so any scare-factor is as minor and subtle as can be, yet still true to the story.
This had to have been a fun production for everyone involved. For everyone to embrace their wackiest side and play it out in an anxious world, and for the audience to be immersed in the show with all that is just plain fun.
There is even some audience interaction plus surprises.
And thank you to the Children’s Theatre Company for quickly helping me secure headphones for my stepson, as his ears are sensitive. I appreciate how the staff make everyone feel welcome.
