The Museum of Illusions is open at the Mall of America, and it’s a lot of fun! I visited with my family and took a lot of photos.
Here is my review and tips for visiting.
About the Museum of Illusions
The Museum of Illusions is located in the Mall of America, on the 2nd floor of North Garden. It’s located directly under the Culinary on North food court, if you’re looking for an easy landmark.
It just opened recently and is a 6,600 square foot museum with 60+ exhibits to explore and blow your mind.
Our Visit
We visited and had so much fun exploring the exhibits.
When you first walk in there are already illusions on the wall with an explanation of the exhibit, and a way you can interact with it.
One of the first rooms is the Tilted Room. Walk in and see yourself tilted in the mirror!
The Vortex room is a sensory experience, for sure! It’s a bridge you can walk on while the world is revolving around you. You WILL lose your balance here! I wobbled as I walked across – I kept feeling like I was going to fall! But I still walked through it multiple times – it was so cool.
You can walk into a kaleidoscope here.
Here’s I’m just hanging around! Don’t miss the room where you can hang off a building in a variety of ways.
In the Ames room you can be short – or tall – whatever you prefer! Try it out with your kids!
There’s a head on a platter illusion to try.
This is just a glimpse of our experience. There was also an RGB room where images on the walls changed with changing colored lights, an Infinity room where you could see indefinite reflections of yourself, and a room where everything was sideways! Plus much more.
Tickets
Tickets are $20 – 24.
You can buy your tickets online or in-person, but the tickets are timed so it’s best to get them in advance online.
DISCOUNTS
The regular price is $24 but military members can save $2 and Mall of America Insiders can save $4!
I asked them at the desk what the best way to save money was and they told me the MOI Insiders discount which is free to sign up for.
So I did that and I recommend signing up for the FREE version of Mall of America Insiders (officially called MOI Insiders) and you can get tickets for $20.
Also, note that this is a PERMANENT attraction! So if it’s too expensive for you now, check back – they will likely have more discounts in the future.
My Review
Is it worth the cost? The cost is a bit high for the amount of time you’ll probably spend here – probably not more than an hour, if even that. I wish it was cheaper or that there were discounts.
But it’s definitely worth visiting if it fits your budget and unique, photo-worthy experiences are your thing. It’s totally my thing so I enjoyed it.
I loved it all, especially rooms you could go in so you could be part of the illusion itself.
Tips for Visiting
To help maximize your experience:
- Take your time going through. There’s a lot of interesting information to read.
- Go through twice to make sure you didn’t miss anything. We were so excited by every new thing we saw that we missed a couple of the rooms!
- Ask the staff to help you take pictures! There were several staff ready to assist visitors, and without them I wouldn’t have gotten some of the cool pictures we got! They helped us get the right angles and poses, and took some photos for us.
- Dress ready for climbing – and photos! There are some exhibits you may want to be climbing a bit or laying on the ground, so if you want to pose creatively, dress for easy mobility. A short tight skirt may not be ideal, for example. (That’s kind of what I was wearing and it was awkward.)
- Bring your family and/or friends! The more people you visit with, the more fun!
