About the exhibit
“Emotions is Play” is the first-ever children’s museum exhibit based on Disney and Pixar’s hit animated film, Inside Out! It’s here at the Minnesota Children’s Museum in St. Paul through September 4, 2023.
The exhibit focuses on the five core emotions featured in the film: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear. It’s full of hands-on and digital experiences to explore some of the ways we express our emotions – and recognize emotions in others, too.
The “Emotions at Play” exhibit features:
An area where you can think about an important memory and how it made you feel, or show how you are feeling right now, by creating a glowing Memory Sphere. Choose a colored paper to match your emotion (such as red for anger) and write about it. When you put your handwritten memory by a sphere it lights up the color of that emotion.

There’s a Control Panel to explore the range and intensity of emotions.
These really cool Emotions Mirrors help kids explore some of the ways we show how we feel with our faces and bodies. The mirror actually reads your face and instantly tells you if you’re sad, angry, happy, afraid or disgusted (though I couldn’t quite figure out how to make myself look “disgusted” vs. anything else).

Create a story and perform it at Dream Productions.
Work to keep the train on track – what feelings do you have when you control and balance the Train of Thought?
Explore how emotions work together as you stack and balance the Emotion Blocks.

They have some familiar characters of course!

What did we think?
There was a lot to do and even I enjoyed the activities – especially the emotions mirrors! Little kids enjoyed spinning wheels, building blocks, and the many other interactive learning activities. My kids are older but wrote emotions for the memory spheres.
I think it’s a fun, unique exhibit for kids, and it’s exciting to see the movie brought to life here! It’s not huge, but with the rest of the museum and all there is to see and do, it adds a lot to a fun day here.

This interactive exhibit is now open in the Special Exhibit Gallery on the museum’s fourth floor. It’s only here through September 4th!
