The classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from 1964 is celebrating his 50th anniversary on television with a collector’s edition DVD & Blu-ray™!
I grew up watching this classic, with characters like Santa, Hermey the Elf and all the toys on the Island of Misfit Toys. Now we watch this classic with our kids and they love watching it over and over.
Plus, now you can see Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical based on the television classic at Stages Theatre in Hopkins! We saw it and loved it – all the scenes from the tv show were in it and it was so much fun! Here’s my review of the live musical at Stages Theatre.
We were sent a copy of the 50th Anniversary DVD to review and watched all of it including the extras. My kids enjoyed watching how to draw Rudolph and other characters, and it was fun to see the holiday pop-up book with interesting facts about the original tv production (for example, did you know that the singer who played Clarice was only 15 years old at the time?).
Here’s the DVD release information – makes a great stocking stuffer gift! You can find it at stores like Target or online at amazon.com.

Based on the Christmas song of the same name by Johnny Marks and a story by Robert L. May, RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER was produced by Rankin/Bass in a revolutionary animation style they called “Animagic.” The stylized stop-motion animation brings to life the adventure of Rudolph and his very shiny nose. Although all of the other reindeer laugh and call him names, little do they know that Rudolph and fellow outcasts Hermey and Yukon Cornelius will soon come face to face with the Abominable Snow Monster, journey to the Island of Misfit Toys – and find their way back home just in time to help Santa save Christmas.
The 2014 celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the first broadcast of
