We took our kids to see the Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! Music is Awesome! show at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on October 14th. Our kids like watching Yo Gabba Gabba on TV and on the computer and were excited to see the show live for the first time.
The theatre was filled with excited kids and parents who danced to the music and screamed and cheered throughout. The Yo Gabba Gabba performers invited everyone to get up many times to dance with them, though our kids were content to sit and watch.
Unfortunately, we felt the show was too loud and flashy. I realize it appealed to many who were there – the high energy and fun were certainly appealing. But the music was so loud it hurt my ears and my 4-year-old covered his. And our 6-year-old complained about the bright lights constantly flashing in her eyes, so we only stayed for the first half of the show.
I hope the second half of the show had more quiet numbers that the kids could just sit and enjoy, especially since we saw some very young kids including some babies. I know the total length of the show was about an hour and 20 minutes, from what the box office told me.
Otherwise, the songs were super simple and easy to sing along to, and the characters on stage did a great job, starting out with their show’s familiar song “There’s a party in my tummy!”
Though I know this show’s performances in the Twin Cities were only on October 14th and it is now performing in other cities, if you are interested in the show in your area, I recommend it if your kids are big fans of Yo Gabba Gabba, but if your kids have any sensory sensitivities, the loud music and flashing bright lights may be too much for some.
(Disclosure: I received 4 free tickets to the show in exchange for sharing their special discounts and writing this review. All opinions are 100% mine.)
